This footage is from the first American Sail Training Association Rally in 1973. The races started in New Bedford, MA and ended in Newport, RI at Bowen’s Wharf. Ten ships participated and the event drew over 12,000 spectators. The footage includes: -Entry into New Bedford. -Preparing to fire a salute to USCG Eagle. Saluting by dropping the flag & adjusting the square sails -Pier-side shots of Eagle, Shenandoah, and Brilliant -Start of race to Block Island, Pioneer ahead of Shenandoah -From Block Island the ships went to Mystic Seaport for shore based competitions and small boat skills -Race from Mystic in Fishers Island Sound to Newport. All day race in damp conditions with Shenandoah winning by a few minutes over Bill of Rights in a downwind tacking duel. Shenandoah threw a fake jibe at Bill of Rights and she fell for it. At this point the film ends, Film/Notes were given to ASTA/Tall Ships America by Stephen Hopkins The ships that participated were Bill of Rights, Pioneer, Shenandoah, Tabor Boy, Leah, Serendipity, Landfall, and Westward. Black Pearl and USCGC Barque Eagle accompanied the ships, but did not race.
